As someone who loves to tweak classic recipes, I’ve often found myself without baking powder when I need it the most. This key ingredient is essential for many baked treats, but I’ve discovered some creative substitutes that can save the day!
One of the best alternatives is to use baking soda with an acidic ingredient like vinegar or lemon juice. The ratio I follow is about 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda for each teaspoon of baking powder, along with a tablespoon of the acid. I gave this method a shot while making my grandmother’s biscuit recipe, and they turned out wonderfully fluffy!
If you have self-rising flour in your pantry, that’s another great option. It already contains baking powder, so you can simply swap it for regular flour in your recipe. Just remember to adjust the salt, as self-rising flour has some included.
Have you tried any other substitutes? What are your favorite tips when you’re in a baking bind? I’d love to hear your experiences!
