Can You Use Baking Powder Instead of Baking Soda?

As a cooking enthusiast, I often find myself in a bind when I’m missing an ingredient. Recently, I pondered whether I could swap baking powder for baking soda, and I wanted to share what I discovered!

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a pure compound that requires an acid to activate it. On the other hand, baking powder already contains both an acid and a base, so it can create that desired lift all on its own. If you’re out of baking soda, you can use baking powder, but remember to use about three times the amount.

Just a heads up: using baking powder might slightly alter the flavor and texture of your baked goods due to the extra ingredients it contains, like starch. If your recipe includes acidic ingredients such as buttermilk or yogurt, sticking with baking soda is usually the better option for optimal results.

Have you ever made this switch in your baking? What were your results? Do you have any other handy kitchen substitutions you’d like to share?
