Have you ever been halfway through a recipe, only to realize you’re out of baking powder? It happened to me recently while preparing for brunch, and it got me thinking about some quick substitutes we can use without sacrificing flavor.
A popular alternative is to combine baking soda with an acid like vinegar or lemon juice. For every teaspoon of baking powder you need, mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of either vinegar or lemon juice. This combo will give you a similar leavening effect. Another option is cream of tartar; you can mix 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda for a great substitute as well.
I’ve had success with these alternatives, especially in recipes like pancakes and muffins where a light, fluffy texture is essential. What about you? Have you found any other effective substitutes for baking powder? What do you usually rely on when you’re in a pinch?
